Wärtsilä to power first fully electric high-speed ferries built in the U.S.

May 29, 2025 |

In Finland, on May 28, Wärtsilä announced it will supply the electric propulsion systems for three battery-electric high-speed ferries—the first of their kind to be built in the United States—for San Francisco Bay Ferry, with deliveries starting in 2026 and the first vessel expected to enter service in early 2027; contract value was not disclosed.

Commissioned by WETA, the public agency behind San Francisco Bay Ferry, and constructed by All American Marine, the vessels will operate new zero-emission routes connecting Treasure Island and Mission Bay to downtown San Francisco. The project is part of the agency’s Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) program to shift its fleet to all-electric power.

Wärtsilä will supply batteries, electric motors, automation and energy management systems, and shoreside charging equipment. The company is also working with the REEF team to integrate vessel and charging designs.

“These 150-passenger ferries represent a transformative step forward in sustainable and innovative marine transportation,” said Ron Wille, president of All American Marine.
