In Finland, Wärtsilä announced it will supply integrated hybrid propulsion systems valued at an undisclosed amount for four new 10,700 DWT tween decker vessels under construction at Chowgule Shipyards in India for Dutch shipowner Vertom Group, with deliveries scheduled in 2026 and vessel commissioning expected beginning in 2027.
Each system will feature the Wärtsilä 25 medium-speed engine, hybrid drivetrain, EcoControl automation, NOx reducer, controllable pitch propeller, and ProTouch control systems, enabling battery-powered sailing without combustion. The project supports Vertom’s fleet renewal and sustainability strategy, with the vessels slated to operate transatlantic routes via the Europe Caribbean Line.
“The Vertom 10,700 design seamlessly integrates cutting-edge innovation with an economically viable approach, with a strong focus on reducing the carbon footprint,” said Thomas van Meerkerk of Vertom. Wärtsilä’s Luuk Hijlkema added, “This combination of solutions represents the latest advances in marine technology.”
Groot Ship Design led vessel design, while Eekels Technology served as system integrator for electric power and drive systems. “Intensive collaboration between Groot Ship Design, Eekels Technology and Wärtsilä results in an optimal propulsion design,” said Eekels’ Ulco Hoekstra. The ships will feature electric propulsion modes and automated fuel-efficiency management across variable conditions.
