In Finland, Wärtsilä announced it will supply its 25 Ammonia engine to power a new cargo vessel for Norway’s Skarv Shipping Solutions. The vessel, to be built at Huanghai shipyard in China, will be the first newbuild to feature the full Wärtsilä ammonia solution, with delivery set for late 2026.
The order includes the engine, fuel gas supply system, after-treatment, and safety systems. Wärtsilä states the setup will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90 percent when running on sustainable ammonia.
“Our aim is to renew the European short-sea fleet while making it more climate-friendly,” said Skarv CEO Jan Øivind Svardal. “We see ammonia as one of the future fuels.”
The Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine is built on the company’s experience with low-pressure dual-fuel LNG engines. “We have developed this solution to deliver safety, efficiency, and sustainability,” said Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine.
A recent Wärtsilä report identifies ammonia as critical to closing the emissions gap left after fuel efficiency gains. The Skarv project moves the technology into real-world application in Northern Europe’s short-sea sector.
