Wales unveils national hydrogen policy

January 22, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that the Welsh Government has officially published its national hydrogen policy, outlining a vision for harnessing the country’s renewable energy capacity to produce low-carbon hydrogen.

Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary Economy Energy and Planning, said: “Wales is rich in renewable energy resources which provides a tremendous opportunity for low carbon hydrogen production.  The Welsh Government is committed to ensuring hydrogen is deployed safely and effectively, making the best use of the technology to deliver decarbonization and economic benefit for Wales.”

“The Welsh Government recognizes the importance of hydrogen for decarbonization, particularly for sectors that are hard to electrify, such as heavy industry and certain transport applications.  We also recognize the significant economic opportunities the technology can deliver for industry, business and citizens in Wales. Hydrogen projects will create jobs and careers during construction, operation and maintenance, as well as safeguarding jobs in other sectors and providing wider supply chain opportunities,” she added.

She added that a previous consultation process received sixty-two responses representing a broad cross-section from industry, academia, government bodies, trade organizations and individuals.
