Voltalia plugs in 10.5-MW biomass-fired power plant in French Guiana

October 19, 2025 |

In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that French renewable power producer Voltalia is carrying out final tests of its 10.5-MW biomass-fired power plant in Sinnamary, French Guiana, ahead of full commissioning of the largest such facility in the territory.

Located on the Petit Saut site, the Sinnamary plant will produce over 80 GWh of electricity annually and meet up to 8% of French Guiana’s power needs once fully operational. Initial boiler ignitions took place in April, marking the start of technical testing.

The project is part of Voltalia’s broader plan to diversify and decarbonize the region’s energy mix by using local biomass resources. With the commissioning of the new facility, Voltalia’s total installed capacity in French Guiana will rise to about 17 MW, covering roughly 16% of the territory’s electricity demand, according to the report.
