Viva Energy launches Australia’s first cruise ship biofuel trial in Sydney

May 7, 2025 |

In Australia, Viva Energy supplied a B20 marine biofuel blend—comprising 80% marine distillate and 20% ISCC+ certified biodiesel made from Australian used cooking oil—to Royal Caribbean Group’s Celebrity Edge in Port Jackson, marking Australia’s first commercial cruise ship biofuel trial and testing a low-carbon fuel supply chain valued by Viva at a strategic step toward broader marine decarbonization.

“We are very pleased to conduct this trial with Royal Caribbean Group from our Sydney Harbour operations, a first-of-its-kind operation to deliver marine biofuel to a cruise ship in Australia,” said Richard Xin, Viva Energy’s General Manager Specialities, Marine & Defence. “Viva Energy is committed to supporting our customers in reducing their carbon footprint by introducing new fuels and innovative supply chains.”

The trial utilized local barge assets operated in collaboration with Polaris Marine. The B100 component was manufactured in Australia by Just Biodiesel and certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification program, ensuring traceability of its emission credentials.

Viva Energy, headquartered in Geelong and listed on the ASX, is one of Australia’s largest marine fuel suppliers and operates a national supply network supporting more than 1,500 service stations and 80 aviation sites.
