Viking Line renews LBG procurement for Turku–Stockholm ferries

February 4, 2026 |

In Finland, Viking Line has renewed its supply of European liquefied biogas for Viking Glory and Viking Grace, securing 50 percent of fuel needs through the first half of 2026. The two vessels operate daily between Turku and Stockholm using a mix of LBG and LNG, resulting in lower sulphur and particle emissions and a reduced climate footprint.

According to Head of Sustainability Dani Lindberg, the company cut greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 50,000 tonnes last year and aims to maintain a high level of LBG use throughout 2026. Passenger and freight customers directly influence the volume of renewable fuel used on the route.

Viking Line is working with the Ports of Stockholm and Turku to develop a fossil-free shipping corridor, with the goal of full decarbonization by 2035. CEO Marcus Risberg said the company’s investment in LBG and energy-efficient vessels represents one of the largest-scale examples of shipping transition in practice.

While many global sea lane initiatives remain at the planning stage, Viking Line’s approach connects renewable fuel sourcing with regular service, infrastructure cooperation, and measurable results in the Baltic Sea.
