Vane Brothers and Shell complete first biofuel delivery to cruise ship in New York

June 18, 2025 |

In New York, Marine Insight reports In early June at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, maritime service firm Vane Brothers and Shell completed a bio-blended marine fuel delivery to the cruise ship Silver Shadow, marking their first such operation in New York and a step toward expanded biofuel access in U.S. ports.

The bunkering was supported by the tug Fort McHenry and barge Double Skin 37, and confirmed by Vane Brothers in a LinkedIn post. The Silver Shadow, operated by Royal Caribbean, received a drop-in biofuel blend, which can be used in existing engines without modifications.

The delivery reflects growing demand for lower-emission marine fuels and follows similar efforts in Europe and Asia. While biofuel supply chains are more mature abroad, availability is gradually increasing in the United States. Vane Brothers described the operation as its first bio-blended bunker delivery in New York.

The joint effort is part of a broader push by Shell and its partners to offer alternative fuel options at major terminals. A Shell representative said the company is “supporting cleaner, more sustainable fuel choices in the maritime sector” through such initiatives, with more deliveries expected as demand and infrastructure develop.
