U.S. sustainable aviation fuel production takes off as new capacity comes online

May 11, 2025 |

In Washington, the US Energy Information Administration reports that U.S. production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is significantly increasing due to new capacity coming online. U.S. Other Biofuels production, including SAF, approximately doubled between December 2024 and February 2025.

SAF, made from waste and agricultural feedstocks, is a key alternative to petroleum jet fuel and can substantially reduce carbon intensity. Investments in SAF are incentivized by the Renewable Fuel Standard, federal tax credits, and state programs. Prior to 2025, SAF production capacity was low, around 2,000 b/d. Capacity increased significantly in late 2024 by about 25,000 b/d with projects completed by Phillips 66 and Diamond Green Diesel. Additional smaller projects are adding capacity in 2025.

Total SAF capacity is now around 30,000 b/d and is expected to drive most of the growth in U.S. Other Biofuels production. EIA forecasts U.S. Other Biofuels production to more than double in 2025 compared to 2024, largely due to increased SAF production, although volumes will still represent less than 2% of total U.S. jet fuel consumption in 2025.
