Tüpraş to develop SAF as part of Sunfusion program

September 16, 2025 |

In Turkey, as part of the “Strategic Transformation Plan,” Tüpraş is implementing investments and projects that support the transition to a low carbon economy. The company aims to develop biofuels by evaluating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and wet biomass resources suitable for maritime fuel production in the SUNFUSION project, supported by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe Program. In this context, purified microalgae and fatty yeasts will be converted to biofuels by hydrothermal liquefaction method. The energy needed for the process will also be provided with solar energy. The 4 year project, which started in January 2025 and will last for 4 years, takes place with the participation of a total of 10 partners from Tupras and METU from Turkey, as well as Greece, France, Germany, Norway and Serbia.

Tüpraş will undertake the analysis and improvement processes of the bioyper developed by hydrothermal liquefaction in the last two years of the project, and will ensure that these products are ready for industrial use.
