TotalEnergies and Avril to study use of intermediate crops for SAF feedstock

June 18, 2025 |

In France, TotalEnergies and Avril have concluded an agreement to jointly study the development of a French sector of intermediate crops for the production of sustainable air fuels (SAF), thus helping to reduce CO 2 emissions from air transport. This agreement is part of the context of an ambitious momentum brought by the European Union, which by 2025 requires the incorporation of 2% of sustainable fuels into aviation, with a target of 70% by 2050.

Intermediate crops are sown crops between two so-called main crops, on the same plot. As a result, they do not require additional land and do not compete with food and feed, while being a source of additional income for farmers. They are eligible under the EU FAS production regulations.

These crops also allow the co-production of plant proteins, thus contributing to the protein sovereignty of France and Europe in animal feed. They also have many agricultural benefits, including limiting soil erosion, improving soil erosion, reducing water losses and helping to preserve biodiversity.

Under this agreement, TotalEnergies and Avril will therefore evaluate the whole value chain, from the selection of plant varieties to the production of biofuels, with the aim of structuring a sustainable French sector.

April will supply vegetable oils from intermediate crops to TotalEnergies, which will transform them into sustainable air fuels in its French biorefineries and by coprocessing in its French and European refineries.
