In Japan, Cosmo Oil Marketing, part of Cosmo Energy Holdings, announced it will join a ship-to-ship biofuel supply initiative at Tokyo Port led by NX Shoji. The project has been selected for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s program supporting commercialization of decarbonized fuels, run in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Service Corporation.
The scheme will supply B24, a blend of heavy fuel oil and fatty acid methyl ester, to vessels calling at Tokyo Port. Supply is scheduled to begin this autumn. Cosmo will provide the base heavy fuel oil, which NX Shoji will blend with biofuel for delivery to Cosmo’s shipping customers and other participating companies.
By enabling biofuel bunkering within Tokyo Bay, the project is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping while testing commercial pathways for low-carbon fuel supply chains. Tokyo authorities describe the effort as part of their “Zero Emission Tokyo” plan, which aims to expand the use of decarbonized fuels across vehicles and vessels.
Cosmo stated that it will continue to promote the commercialization of biofuels in transport and contribute to both the city’s climate goals and the wider development of related industries.
