Tokyo opens subsidy program for biofuel vehicles and vessels

May 21, 2025 |

In Japan, the metropolitan government of Tokyo began accepting applications for a subsidy program covering up to ¥80 million per project to support the commercialization of vehicles and ships using low-carbon biofuels, with a total of three projects expected to be selected by June 27.

The program targets companies based in Tokyo or groups led by such firms, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in sectors beyond those already adopting biofuels, such as trucks, buses, and aircraft. Eligible costs include fuel purchases, outsourcing, equipment, construction, property rental, promotion, and intellectual property expenses. The subsidy covers 80% of approved expenses for each selected project.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Center for Climate Change Actions (Cool Net Tokyo) stated that the initiative is intended to “promote Tokyo’s decarbonization” and support “the further spread and expansion of O-fuel.” The term refers to advanced biofuels with low environmental impact.
