Thailand orders 10 electric hydrofoil ferries from Sweden’s Candela

In Bangkok, Thai operator Seudamgo by Leopard Transportation signed an agreement on October 2 to acquire ten electric hydrofoil ferries from Sweden’s Candela for routes to Koh Kood, one of Thailand’s least developed and most environmentally sensitive islands.

Announced at the SX Sustainability Expo, the order covers 20-passenger vessels that cruise above the water on foils at over 25 knots, cutting wake, underwater noise, and energy use. The ferries will operate between the mainland and Koh Kood, completing the 20-nautical mile route in 40 minutes.

“Candela’s P-12 foil electric technology is a game-changer,” said Surachai Suwanthanakul, CEO of Leopard Transportation. “We are proud to be the first to bring this unique technology to Thailand and South-East Asia.”

“This agreement demonstrates how Thailand can leapfrog directly to sustainable waterborne transport,” said Gustav Hasselskog, founder and CEO of Candela.

The vessels will replace gasoline-powered boats currently serving the route and are Candela’s first order in Southeast Asia.
