Tallink’s MyStar joins Gasum’s bio-LNG pool under FuelEU Maritime rules

December 4, 2025 |

In Finland, Nordic energy company Gasum has signed an agreement with Baltic provider Elenger to add Tallink’s vessel MyStar to its FuelEU Maritime compliance pool. The ship now runs on bio-LNG supplied by Gasum’s Pori terminal, generating surplus compliance credits under the European Union’s new maritime emissions rules.

The FuelEU Maritime regulation, which took effect this year, requires ships operating in EU waters to reduce greenhouse gas intensity over time. Pooling allows ship operators to meet these targets collectively by combining lower and higher emitting vessels under a single compliance plan. Gasum’s pool, backed by its own bio-LNG supply, offers operators a streamlined way to meet regulatory requirements.

Tallink, which operates 11 vessels between Estonia, Finland, and Sweden, aims to fully switch both MyStar and Megastarto liquefied biomethane by next year. CEO Paavo Nõgene said the goal is to help passengers and freight customers reduce their environmental footprint.

“We are doing our best to secure as much compliance as possible by year end,” said Gasum’s Jacob Granqvist. Elenger CEO Margus Kaasik called the move a natural next step, noting the company has supported Tallink’s shift to LNG since 2017.
