Switch Maritime sets sights on first US-built hydrogen RoPax ferry

November 13, 2024 |

In Norway, TradeWinds reports Switch Maritime announced plans to order the first US-built hydrogen-powered RoPax ferry, with a design approved in Norway. This 80-car, 300-passenger vessel, using liquefied hydrogen, is part of Switch’s commitment to zero-carbon marine transportation.

“With rigorous planning, state-of-the-art engineering and support from leading industry partners and the US Coast Guard, we are ready to pioneer zero-carbon LH2 fuelling for heavier, higher-horsepower workboats,” said Switch CEO Pace Ralli, underscoring the company’s leadership in maritime energy transition.

This RoPax ferry, based on Norway’s MF Hydra and boasting DNV approval, will need additional clearance from the US Coast Guard. “What I like about LH2 fuelling is that it will follow the same IGF Code that applies to cryogenic LNG fuelling of ships in the US, so we have a precedent regulatory framework to work from,” Ralli explained.

Set to reach 14 knots with weekly truck fuelling, the vessel will offer a greener solution where battery-only options fall short. Switch Maritime is also developing a 150-passenger hydrogen catamaran for San Francisco Bay, set to be unveiled early next year.
