In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Swiss utility BKW has announced plans to acquire a 40% interest in a hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plant under development in Hamm, Germany, as the Swiss utility pivots away from coal and towards flexible, lower-carbon electricity assets.
The project, a joint venture with German municipal utility Trianel, will be designed for future hydrogen operation to meet grid-balancing needs amid Europe’s renewable expansion, according to the report.
“The accelerated phase-out of coal and the massive expansion of renewable energies make hydrogen-capable power plants indispensable for ensuring security of supply in Europe,” said BKW CEO Robert Itschner.
