In Sweden, on September 30, PowerCell Group announced it will supply 14 Marine System 225 fuel cell units, valued at over $4.2 million, to power two hydrogen-fueled bulk carriers being developed by Norway’s GMI Rederi for delivery between 2026 and 2027.
Each 85-meter vessel will be fitted with seven units, providing more than 3 megawatts of power and enabling fully zero-emission operation using compressed hydrogen. “Bulk carriers are demanding applications, and the fact that our technology is chosen here demonstrates that hydrogen fuel cells are no longer just pilots,” said Stig Kallestad, Marine Director at PowerCell. The project is backed by Norway’s Enova fund and the NOx Fund, and forms part of the Green Shipping Programme, a public–private initiative to accelerate clean maritime technologies.
GMI Rederi selected fuel cells after evaluating technical maturity, fuel access, and cost. “We needed to think completely anew,” said CEO Torstein Holsvik. System integration and certification will be handled by Germany’s eCap Marine.
“These ships represent a new and important segment,” said PowerCell CEO Richard Berkling. “This is not only about two ships; it is about setting a new standard for zero-emission maritime transport.”
