Sweden announces second BECCS reverse auction

December 17, 2025 |

In Sweden, according to the climate policy goals, Sweden must have net zero emissions by 2045 and then negative emissions of greenhouse gases. In order to achieve negative emissions, additional measures are also required. One way is to separate carbon dioxide from biogenic origin, so-called bio-CCS, from, for example, various industrial processes or combustion plants and store it permanently in geological formations.

To realize this solution, policy instruments are needed to develop the value chain and create business models for bio-CCS and thus negative emissions. The bio-CCS support system can contribute to this. Companies can seek support for investment and operating costs for the capture, transport and geological storage of carbon dioxide of biogenic origin generated from operations in Sweden.

The supported projects should be able to deliver geologically stored cinematographically stored carbon dioxide no later than four years from and with a decision on support. Aid is paid for at most 15 years from the start of the storage. Companies that want to contribute to negative emissions through the capture, transport and geological storage of biogenic carbon dioxide (bio-CCS) are welcome to participate in the second call through reverse auction. The deadline is August 13, 2026.
