In Denmark, Safety4sea reported that Svitzer announced that the tugs operating in the Port of Esbjerg, Denmark, switched to biofuel on 1 February 2025.
The report noted that Svitzer tugs will be sailing on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and customers using Svitzer’s towing services in and out of the port will be subject to EcoBAF, which is short for Ecofriendly Bunker Adjustment Factor.
The switch aims to contribute to the decarbonization of shipping and the port of Esbjerg’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.
“Port of Esbjerg has signed up for the “Getting to Zero Coalition” and thereby committed to becoming CO2 neutral by 2030, or in just five years. We have come far, but we depend on our customers transitioning to green biofuels to deliver on this ambition fully,” said Dennis Pedersen, CEO, Esbjerg Port.
