Suomen Lantakaasu gets environmental permit for new Finnish biogas plant

April 15, 2025 |

In Finland, Suomen Lantakaasu Oy’s new biogas and fertilizer production plant in Varpaisjärvi, Lapinlahti, has been granted an environmental permit. With the completion of the area’s zoning and permitting, Suomen Lantakaasu has made a positive investment decision to build the plant. The plant planned for Lapinlahti is one of the so-called satellite plants of the industrial-scale centralized liquefied biogas production plant under construction in Kiuruvesi. Construction work in Lapinlahti will begin immediately as planned.

The plant to be built in Lapinlahti will produce biogas from manure and agricultural side streams. The biogas will be further processed into biomethane. The purpose of the satellite plant is to keep the transport distances of agricultural waste and manure used for biogas production as short as possible.

The biomethane production plant will be located in the village of Porkkala, located fifteen kilometers from the center of Varpaisjärvi. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026. The biomethane produced at the plant will be pressurized and transported for liquefaction to the Suomen Lantakaasu Kiuruvesi plant under construction, which will also be commissioned next year. The Lapinlahti plant will produce approximately 717 tons (10 GWh) of biomethane per year. In addition to biogas, the manufacturing process also produces 34,500 tons of organic fertilizer annually. The fertilizer is delivered back to the farms.

The biogas plant under construction in Kiuruvesi is intended to produce renewable liquefied biogas from manure from cattle farms in Upper Savo and other side streams from agriculture and the food industry.
