In India, the Hindustan Times reports that in light of the success of grain-based ethanol, the sugar industry is calling for an extension on the current 20% ethanol mandate in an attempt to improve on-farm economics and help to recover market share. Sugarcane-based ethanol dropped 73% to just 28%. In the season before last, sugar coop mills supplied it with 3.96 billion liters of ethanol by diverting 3.4 million metric tons of sugar which accounted for 73% of ethanol market share. Just two seasons later, cane-based ethanol topped 28%.
