St1 Biokraft inaugurates 13th biogas plant

In Sweden, St1 Biokraft inaugurated its new flagship plant in Mönsterås, Kalmar County on Wednesday. The plant is the company’s 13th facility and has an annual production capacity of approximately 138 GWh of liquefied biogas (LBG), making it one of the largest in Sweden.

St1 Biokraft Mönsterås is a large-scale biogas plant that, at full capacity, produces liquefied biogas equivalent to approximately 13 million liters of diesel annually. The groundbreaking for the construction took place in February 2023, and the plant was completed in the spring of 2025. The first delivery of liquefied biogas occurred in August, and production is expected to gradually increase to reach full capacity around the turn of the year. Mönsterås is one of Sweden’s most livestock-dense municipalities, and with its strong agriculture, the area offers good access to substrate. The plant receives approximately 260,000 metric tons of manure annually as input for production.
