Spanish researchers produce microalga for biofuels that cleans olive oil mill wastewater

November 24, 2025 |

In Spain, Retema reports team from the  Department of Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering at the University of Jaén (UJA)  has succeeded in producing biomass from the microalga  Neochloris oleoabundans , which is capable of  decontaminating water from olive oil mills  and accumulating compounds of high industrial value. This advance opens the door to generating biofuels, biofertilizers, or cosmetic ingredients from a waste product that has traditionally been an environmental liability

The study ‘Production of Bioproducts from Wastewater Treatment Using the Microalga Neochloris oleoabundans’ , published in Engineering in Life Sciences , demonstrates how olive oil waste can become a  source of nutrients  for the controlled growth of this microalga, which thrives even in hostile conditions.
