Spain allocates up to $419 million to boost hydrogen through European Hydrogen Bank

March 6, 2025 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Spain has committed up to $419 million from its post-Covid recovery fund to invest in the European Hydrogen Bank’s Auction-as-a-Service (AaaS) scheme. The country’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco), noted that this investment aims to enhance the development and deployment of renewable hydrogen within the EU economic area, significantly supporting Spain’s industrial, transport, and other sectors that are challenging to decarbonize. The initiative, outlined in a draft royal decree and currently open for public consultation until March 14, 2025, is part of Spain’s broader effort to integrate renewable hydrogen as a vital component of its national energy strategy, according to the report. The funds are earmarked for the second auction of the European Hydrogen Bank, which concluded its application phase on February 20, 2025. The final amount allocated will depend on the outcomes of the H2 Valles program, which focuses on incentivizing large industrial clusters and is currently under evaluation, the report added.
