South Korea funds hydrogen ship test site

April 17, 2025 |

In South Korea, No Cut News reports the Gyeongsangnam-do provincial government announced on April 10 that it will spend ₩19.5 billion—including ₩10 billion in national funds—by 2027 to construct a ground-based demonstration facility for cryogenic liquid hydrogen ship equipment as part of a national industrial innovation project.

Located at the Korea Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Research Institute’s alternative fuel center, the facility will test and verify extreme low-temperature equipment for hydrogen-fueled ships. The project is led by the Korea Institute of Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment and Materials, with Gyeongnam Techno Park and Pusan National University supporting prototype development, certification assistance, and materials research.

The 2025 work plan includes “electrical wiring, detailed design and equipment ordering of liquid hydrogen demonstration facilities,” as well as risk assessment and safety verification to ensure system integrity. The province described the effort as necessary “to proactively respond to the future eco-friendly ship market.”

The completed center will support commercial testing and verification of hydrogen equipment for ships of varying sizes and applications. The project is part of a wider provincial initiative that also includes support for ammonia-fueled vessels, green ship retrofitting, and digital engineering for low-carbon maritime technologies.
