In Korea, On April 26, 2025, at Incheon’s Songdo New Port, SK Incheon Petrochem launched Korea’s first domestically produced marine fuel blending 70% straight run fuel oil with 30% bio-residual oil—called B30—to align with shipping-sector decarbonization targets and reduce emissions by approximately 25%.
The fuel was jointly developed with JC Chemical and certified to meet ISO 8217 marine fuel standards following testing with SK Innovation’s Environmental Science and Technology Institute. The bio-component has also received ISCC EU certification for environmental performance.
The International Maritime Organization mandates a 21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from marine fuels by 2030 compared to 2008 levels, with penalties tied to emissions overages. The regulation was confirmed during MEPC 83 on April 11.
The B30 blend uses SRFO derived from ultra-light crude oil in a single refining step, unlike typical multi-feedstock marine blends. SK says this ensures higher calorific value, fewer impurities, and lower maintenance costs.
“We will ensure a stable supply of next-generation fuel that combines both environmental performance and quality to domestic and international shipping companies,” said Yoon Young-ho, head of SK Incheon’s B2B business unit. The company aims to expand supply across Korea’s west coast and enter global marine fuel markets.
