Singapore Methanol and Global Energy drive bio-methanol initiative

November 6, 2024 |

In the Netherlands, Offshore Energy reports Singapore based Global Energy Overseas and Singapore Methanol signed a memorandum of understanding to promote bio-methanol as a viable bunker fuel, involving projects on FuelEU Maritime compliance pooling, green methanol storage and distribution, and the development of next-generation alternative marine fuels.

“This partnership is a major step in advancing Singapore as a key player in the global green methanol landscape. We’re excited to leverage our expertise to bring innovative, sustainable fuel solutions to the maritime sector,” said Charles Shang, CEO of Singapore Methanol.

Singapore, as the world’s busiest transshipment hub and top bunkering port, has seen rising demand for low carbon fuels. In 2023, bunker sales hit 51.8 million tonnes, with 1.2% attributed to alternative fuels. This initiative builds on recent advancements such as the July 2023 methanol bunkering of the Laura Maersk and the introduction of the MT Maple, the country’s first methanol bunkering vessel, in December 2023.
