Shanghai Port begins regular methanol bunkering for container ships

January 8, 2025 |

In Singapore, Manifold Times reported Shanghai Port conducted its first methanol bunkering operation of 2025 on January 1, supplying 3,000 metric tonnes of green methanol to the Ane Maersk during simultaneous operations at the Yangshan Port Area. This marked the start of regular methanol bunkering services at the port, according to Shanghai International Port Group.

The operation utilized the Hai Gang Zhi Yuan, Shanghai’s first methanol bunkering vessel, which had previously fueled the Ane Maersk in April 2024 during China’s inaugural green methanol bunkering operation. These milestones highlight the port’s growing capacity to support cleaner marine fuels.

Shanghai Port aims to achieve an annual green methanol bunkering capacity of 1 million metric tonnes and an LNG bunkering capacity of 1 million cubic meters by 2030, part of its “double-million” sustainability target. Currently, the port operates one methanol and two LNG bunkering vessels, with plans to expand both fleets.

This development reflects SIPG’s ongoing partnerships with major shipping companies, including Maersk, which recently introduced methanol-powered container ships to its fleet. As global shipping transitions to low-emission fuels, Shanghai Port is positioning itself as a key hub for sustainable bunkering solutions.
