Shanghai launches research center for next-gen ship pollution

July 23, 2025 |

In China, a new research center aimed at tackling pollution from alternative marine fuels was formally launched on July 16 at the facilities of Yisheng Shipping and Storage in Shanghai. The center is a joint initiative by Shanghai Maritime University, the Pudong Maritime Authority, and Yisheng, and targets pollutants linked to fuels like biodiesel, methanol, and ammonia.

As the maritime sector moves toward low-carbon fuels, the center will address a mounting challenge: what to do with the novel pollutants these fuels leave behind. The goal is to develop standardized treatment processes and preventive technologies for byproducts such as scrubber washwater and exhaust residues.

Shanghai Maritime University Vice President Yan Wei said the effort responds to China’s dual-carbon goals and IMO decarbonization mandates. The university brings expertise in emissions detection and green shipping tech, and aims to integrate research with industrial needs and policy support.

COSCO Shipping Energy and officials from the Shanghai Maritime Bureau also attended the opening. The center plans to partner with major shipping firms and labs to scale solutions and train future specialists.
