Shanghai forum tackles innovation in shipping finance and insurance

In China, the 2024 North Bund International Shipping Forum, held from October 22-24 in Shanghai, focused on the role of finance and insurance in advancing the global shipping industry. Co-hosted by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange and China Shipowners Mutual Insurance Association, the “Finance and Insurance” session on October 23 brought together leading figures from organizations like the International Shipping Association and Greek Shipping Finance Association.
Centered on the theme “Innovation Promotes Development, Change Meets Challenges,” the forum explored how shipping futures derivatives and maritime insurance can strengthen the industry. Shanghai Municipal Government Deputy Secretary-General Wang Ping emphasized the city’s commitment to becoming a global financial technology hub supporting sustainable, low-carbon shipping. Additional speakers, including Sun Dabin of China’s Maritime Bureau and Gaiplaten of the International Shipping Council, highlighted the importance of collaboration in developing zero-carbon fuel production, risk management, and infrastructure to ensure safer and more sustainable shipping.
The event concluded with a strategic cooperation agreement among the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, Xinhua News Agency, and China Economic Information News Agency, setting the stage for future collaboration in green and digital shipping. This forum reaffirms Shanghai’s commitment to leading global maritime innovation.
