Shanghai breaks ground on 100K tpa green methanol facility

January 8, 2025 |

In Greece, Safety4Sea reported Shanghai Huayi Holdings Group started construction on a “100,000-ton annual green methanol project” in Shanghai, part of efforts to align with China’s “dual carbon” strategy of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

The facility, described by the company as a collaboration between state-owned assets and enterprises, represents a step toward green development in the energy and shipping sectors. According to a statement from Shanghai Huayi, the project will contribute to “serving the national ‘dual carbon’ strategy and promoting the upgrading of Shanghai’s international shipping center.”

Once operational, the facility will produce green methanol to meet the growing demand for cleaner energy alternatives, particularly in shipping. Methanol is gaining traction as a low-emission fuel, and this project positions Shanghai as a key player in the global transition to sustainable energy.

The project reflects Shanghai’s commitment to advancing local infrastructure while supporting national carbon reduction objectives, further cementing its role as an international shipping and innovation hub.
