Scandlines to convert two Fehmarn Belt ferries to plug-in hybrids

June 11, 2025 |

In Denmark, Scandlines announced a €31 million investment to convert two ferries on the Puttgarden–Rødby route into plug-in hybrids by early 2026, aiming to cut CO₂e emissions by up to 80% and operate primarily on renewable electricity.

The refit is contracted to Western Shiprepair in Lithuania and includes 5 MWh battery systems per vessel, 12-minute portside charging at both terminals, and full integration with existing port infrastructure. The first ferry will enter conversion in August, followed by the second in December. The project is partially funded by Germany’s transport ministry, covering up to 40% of costs under a national coastal vessel decarbonization program.

“It’s about more than just technology, it’s about responsibility,” said Scandlines COO Michael Guldmann Petersen. “We are moving much closer to our goal of making the route direct emission-free by 2030.”

Ingrida Streckienė, Director of Western Shiprepair, said the project “is a significant step forward, not just for Scandlines’ ambitious sustainability goals, but for the entire ferry industry.”

This initiative follows over €380 million in green investments since 2013, including hybridization, rotor sails, and energy-saving technologies across Scandlines’ fleet. The company aims to become a direct emission-free operator by 2040.
