Scandlines tests €80M emission-free ferry ahead of Fehmarnbelt launch

May 7, 2025 |

In Denmark, Scandlines announced that its €80 million zero direct emissions freight ferry completed its first sea trial in Turkey’s Sea of Marmara, where shipbuilder Cemre tested the 147-meter vessel’s battery systems, propulsion, and onboard electrical installations in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and Scandlines engineers.

“During the ten-day sea trial, the ship’s batteries and electrical installations were tested. We also got to see the propulsion system in operation for the first time,” said Rasmus Nielsen, Scandlines Vice President for Fleet and Administration. The vessel has a 10 MWh battery system and will recharge in 12 minutes once deployed.

The new ferry is intended for the Puttgarden–Rødby route across the Fehmarnbelt between Germany and Denmark, with operations scheduled to begin in autumn 2025. It will carry up to 66 freight units and 140 passengers with a crossing time of 45 minutes at a service speed of 16 knots.

Commissioning work is underway at the outfitting quay, and the ship will travel to Rødbyhavn via Gibraltar and Brest with portions of the future crew onboard. “It will be a very big day for us when we see our new ferry arrive in Rødbyhavn,” said COO Michael Guldmann Petersen.
