Sasha and Zesta’s zero-emission shopping spree

August 7, 2025 |

In the UK, two industry coalitions, ZESTAs and the SASHA Coalition, have joined forces to push maritime decarbonization into regulatory reality. Together they represent 70 companies backing hydrogen, battery-electric, and wind propulsion as the shipping sector’s clearest route to absolute zero emissions.

Their aim: to close the gap between what’s technically possible and what’s politically supported. “The technologies are ready. The policy isn’t,” said SASHA’s Director of EU Policy Aurelia Leeuw, who warned that those best positioned to deploy zero-emission solutions still lack the right incentives.

The partnership builds on recent joint lobbying, including a May 2025 letter to EU commissioners urging tighter rules after a weak IMO outcome. They called for tougher emissions targets under FuelEU Maritime, support for e-fuel producers in the EU’s transport plan, and expansion of the ETS to smaller ships.

Next month, SASHA and ZESTAs will co-host the “HyWindships” event at the International Maritime Organization during London International Shipping Week, aiming to bring regulators into the same room as innovators.
