Sarawak’s methanol sets sail for China

In Malaysia, Dayak Daily reported Sarawak Petchem shipped 20,000 metric tonnes of methanol to China from Bintulu on January 14, marking a milestone in the state’s energy ambitions. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, speaking at the Tanjung Kidurong event, reflected on the project’s uncertain beginnings. “We were unsure at first…but I said, let’s take the risk. We have Sarawakians with the technology and expertise,” he said.

The journey involved overcoming challenges in securing funding due to the lack of a production track record. Collaboration with vendors like Samsung enabled a cost-effective construction process for the methanol plant and a 3km export jetty. “Who would have thought we would have a jetty at sea? But now, we have one to supply methanol to incoming ships,” Abang Johari added.

The premier also announced Sarawak Petchem’s Green Methanol Project, aligning with global demand for sustainable energy sources. “By mixing carbon with hydrogen produced using renewable energy…we can produce green methanol,” he said, highlighting its potential as a sustainable marine fuel.

Sarawak Petchem Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Aziz Husain emphasized the project’s climate impact, calling it “a global model of Sarawak’s active participation in shaping the green energy transition.”
