Samsung creates e-paper with phytoplankton display

February 2, 2026 |

In South Korea, Samsung Electronics has unveiled an e-paper with a display made of phytoplankton-based plastics. E‑paper is a display technology that replicates the appearance of printed ink on paper, delivering excellent readability, minimal energy use, and greater flexibility than conventional screens. It is widely employed in e‑readers, digital signage, and other devices where extended battery life and visual comfort are key.

The 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper (EM13DX model) deploys the world’s first display designed with a biobased resin housing derived from phytoplankton. It uses advanced digital ink technology and ultralow power to offer businesses a practical alternative to traditional printed signage.

“As businesses look for more flexible and efficient ways to communicate, Samsung Color E-Paper represents a shift in how digital signage fits into everyday operations,” said Hyoung Jae Kim, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “By incorporating innovative technology such as phytoplankton-based bio-resin, we’re demonstrating our commitment to advancing both display technology and the materials behind it.”
