In the Netherlands, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and EDGE Navigation signed a letter of intent during the recent World Hydrogen Summit to jointly develop infrastructure and regulations to support liquid hydrogen shipping, aiming to prepare the port for EDGE’s LH₂ vessels expected to enter service in 2028.
EDGE Navigation is designing a series of commercial cargo ships and a liquid hydrogen tanker capable of import and ship-to-ship bunkering. The collaboration will focus on defining the necessary policies and procedures for ship-to-shore handling and bunkering of liquid hydrogen, positioning Rotterdam as a maritime decarbonization hub.
According to the Port Authority, “liquid hydrogen will further strengthen our portfolio,” alongside ammonia and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). The initiative is part of a broader strategy to establish a functioning hydrogen value chain that includes multiple fuel types and delivery systems.
The agreement reflects a growing emphasis on port readiness for alternative fuels, with Rotterdam continuing to expand its role as a critical node in Europe’s clean energy transition. Both parties underscored that coordinated development involving regulators and market stakeholders is essential to scaling liquid hydrogen for the maritime sector.
