RightShip and Thetius flag seafarer safety gap in maritime climate plans

November 13, 2025 |

In London, RightShip released its From Pledges to Practice report, calling out a disconnect between climate ambition and frontline execution in shipping. Commissioned by RightShip and conducted by maritime research consultancy Thetius, the analysis draws on interviews across vessel operators, ports, and charterers to assess how decarbonization strategies align with operational realities.

The report finds that while more than one‑third of shipping companies claim to integrate decarbonization into fleet planning, fewer than one in five incorporate seafarer safety considerations tied to new fuel systems or onboard changes. “New fuels and equipment may reduce emissions but increase complexity and risk if crews are unprepared,” the authors note.

Thetius, which advises maritime leaders on technology, operations and decarbonization strategy, points out that safety and skill gaps could become a hidden drag on the green transition. The report warns that without transparent training plans, crew buy‑in, and safety frameworks, many emissions reduction efforts risk being undermined by human‑factor failures.
