Qatar starts world’s largest blue ammonia plant

November 27, 2024 |

In Qatar, QatarEnergy has begun constructing the world’s largest blue ammonia plant in Mesaieed Industrial City, with an investment of QAR 4.4 billion. The facility will produce 1.2 million tons of low-carbon ammonia annually and is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2026.

The plant will include a CO2 capture and storage unit capable of handling 1.5 million tons per year and will use 35 megawatts of electricity generated from a solar power plant currently under construction in Mesaieed. The project is being developed in collaboration with Qatar Fertilizer Company and constructed by ThyssenKrupp and CCC.

The ammonia produced will be used in industries and shipping, with the captured CO2 helping to reduce overall emissions. QatarEnergy’s existing expertise in ammonia production, gained through fertilizer manufacturing, is being applied to this facility. Mesaieed Industrial City, where the plant is being built, includes infrastructure and a port for petrochemical exports.

QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi stated, “This plant will enhance our ability to provide the world with low-carbon products, in line with the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.” The plant is part of QatarEnergy’s wider clean energy portfolio, including LNG, petrochemicals, and solar power.
