PuriFire Energy joins UK consortium to pilot waste-to-methanol maritime fuel

January 11, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that PuriFire Energy has joined a UK government-supported consortium to pilot green methanol production for the maritime sector.

The company confirmed its participation in the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition 6 (CMDC6), working alongside Shoreham Port, Associated British Ports, Newcastle University, Xpress Feeders and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. The initiative is designed to test whether green methanol derived from wastewater and waste carbon can be produced at scale and used as a viable alternative marine fuel, according to the report.

Core workstreams include the development of a green methanol pilot plant, independent third-party life-cycle analysis, feedstock testing and an assessment of deployment pathways for larger-scale rollout, the report added.
