Puerto Rico producing biodiesel for 30% of municipal vehicles

November 24, 2025 |

In Puerto Rico, El Territorio reports Puerto Rico continues to strengthen its Biodiesel Plant through collaborative work with local municipalities and a strong citizen commitment to environmental stewardship. The initiative is showing highly positive results: the biodiesel produced now covers 30% of the fuel consumption for municipal vehicles.

The processing of recovered oil yields not only biodiesel but also other value-added byproducts. These include fertilizers used in the new municipal seedling nursery, insect repellent, creams, graphite grease, hydraulic oil, and 2-stroke oil, all intended for the municipality’s own use.

Currently, the plant produces between 5,000 and 7,000 liters of biodiesel per month, covering 30% of the municipality’s self-consumption. Furthermore, the glycerol—the only byproduct of the process—is used to develop new byproducts, thus strengthening a circular economy model that positions Puerto Rico as a leader in renewable energy within the province.
