Ports report big steps on Pacific green shipping corridor

October 30, 2024 |

In Shanghai, the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Shanghai presented their first annual report on the Green Shipping Corridor at the North Bund International Shipping Forum. The Corridor, a 2022 initiative to decarbonize the busy trans-Pacific shipping route, has set 2030 as its target year for fully zero-emission container ships.

Major shippers involved in the Corridor initiative include A.P. Moller-Maersk, CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping Lines, Evergreen, and Ocean Network Express. Three working groups—Energy Supply, Carriers, and Ports—were established to advance specific aspects of the project. The Energy Supply group is developing alternative fuel supplies and establishing production schedules, while the Carriers group coordinates timelines for the introduction of low-emission vessels. Meanwhile, the Ports group is expanding shore power and clean energy refueling options at the Port of Shanghai and aligning Los Angeles/Long Beach programs to support green shipping.

As the Corridor moves towards full-scale implementation, the partners identified major challenges, such as fuel availability, pricing, and infrastructure needs, and outlined next steps to build the capacity for decarbonized shipping. This report marks a significant milestone in the journey toward sustainable trans-Pacific trade.
