Porto Alegre gets region’s first biomethane plant

January 22, 2026 |

In Brazil, the first biomethane production plant in Rio Grande do Sul is located in the landfill of Minas do Leão near Porto Alegre. Daily, 1.7 metric tons of municipal solid waste from Porto Alegre heads to the unit owned by Riograndense Waste Recovery Company (CRVR).

With the new plant, organic waste is now transformed into biomethane, a renewable fuel that can be used, for example, in the supply of trucks. The initiative contributes to the circular economy and positions the Capital among the pioneering cities in converting waste into clean energy.
