PORR develops CO2 storage cycle path with biochar in “green” asphalt

September 4, 2025 |

In Austria, PORR has developed a CO2 storage cycle path in Burgenland. Optimised mixing processes are an essential part of the new PORR ESG strategy. With the use of recycled materials and the reduction of production temperatures, they contribute to CO2 reduction in construction projects.

The CO 2 storage bike path in the municipality of Pamhagen, which the PORR has built in a pilot project together with the business agency Burgenland Research- und Innovations GmbH and the State of Burgenland. In this process, vegetable coal was added to the “green” asphalt – including from fracture reeds or other regional agricultural residues. An admixture of up to 5% is possible. The CO 2 present in the plant material is bound by the pyrolysis process in the form of plant charcoal and can no longer escape into the atmosphere.

PORR, together with the project partners, co-developed the asphalt recipe in Burgenland, adapted it in its own large-scale mixing plant and produced a practical asphalt mixture. This was then built the bike path. As part of its Technology Management and Innovation division, it has accompanied the process and will subsequently evaluate the durability of the asphalt through an annual cycle.
