In Greece, Manifold Times reports that biofuel bunkering is now available at the Port of Piraeus as of May 16, 2025, where vessels can refuel with certified biofuels under new Greek regulations—placing the port among a growing number in Europe offering lower-carbon marine fuel options.
The terminal operator said it “swiftly moved into action to re-evaluate legal foundations for biofuel bunkering” and has “partnered with suppliers to provide full-service bunkering options.” In practice, this means coordinating port approvals, sustainability documentation, and barge delivery with certified fuel suppliers. No blend levels or volumes were disclosed.
The port is operated by Piraeus Container Terminal, a wholly owned subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Ports. Strategically located just beyond the Suez Canal, Piraeus serves as a key entry point to Europe and a major transshipment hub for cargo moving between Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. It handled over 7 million TEUs in 2023, making it one of the busiest container ports in Europe.
With this addition, Piraeus joins ports such as Rotterdam, Singapore, and Shanghai in offering certified biofuel bunkering to support maritime decarbonization.
