Philippines to open waste-to-energy auction in early 2026

October 19, 2025 |

In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that the Philippine government plans to hold an auction for waste-to-energy projects that source their waste feedstock from Metro Manila and highly urbanized cities (HUCs).

Under the plan, the competitive round will be launched in January 2026 and completed by the closing quarter of 2027. A notice of auction is due to be published this month, according to the report.

According to data by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) and cited by the Department of Energy (DOE), Metro Manila and HUCs produced around 6.12 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2024, equivalent to 335 MW base load. To address the issue, the Philippines will also open another call in the second quarter of 2026, targeting biomass and waste-to-energy projects across the entire country, the report added.
