In Norway, Pherousa received Approval in Principle from both ABS and DNV for its ammonia cracking propulsion technology designed for 64,000 dwt bulk carriers, clearing a regulatory hurdle toward carbon-free copper shipping across oceans with no onboard fossil fuels.
The certification confirms the viability of Pherousa’s system, which uses its licensed HIWAR® cracking technology from Metacon to convert ammonia into hydrogen for fuel cells—enabling fully electric propulsion with no CO₂ emissions. The approval, granted without technical objections, was the result of joint work with Deltamarin (design), Babcock (fuel supply systems), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (flag state), and Metacon (technology development and shareholder).
“The Approval in Principle from two of the leading classification societies and certification bodies… clearly state that there are no showstoppers of the Pherousa technology for marine application,” said Hans Bredrup, Chairman of Pherousa AS. “Only ships that have no carbon fuels onboard can ensure… the copper utilized for solar panels or electric cars is free of emissions in its supply chain.”
Pherousa’s ships are planned to enter service around 2030, aligning with new IMO regulations and supporting commodity clients seeking verified zero-emissions maritime logistics. The vessels will initially serve the copper sector.
