Petrobras to sell ISCC certified B24 in Rio Grande

January 30, 2025 |

In Brazil, on January 16, Petrobras secured ISCC EU RED certification to sell bunker fuel with 24% biodiesel at the Rio Grande Terminal in southern Brazil, making it the first company in the country to receive such certification for renewable marine fuel.

The certification ensures traceability and emissions reductions in VLS B24, a fuel blend consisting of conventional bunker fuel with 24% certified biodiesel. Petrobras had already received authorization from Brazil’s National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels in July 2024 to market marine fuels with renewable content.

Testing of VLS B24 began at the Rio Grande Terminal in 2022. The company states that, compared to traditional fossil-based bunker fuel, it can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%, depending on the biodiesel feedstock. “The certification of VLS B24’s renewable fraction is another indicator of our strategy to lead a just energy transition,” said Claudio Schlosser, Petrobras’ Director of Logistics, Trading, and Markets.
