Pertamina International Shipping commits to B40 for marine

February 6, 2025 |

In Indonesia, Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the government’s program by using B40 fuel for shipping transportation. A total of 189 vessels operated by PIS for national energy distribution have been using this biodiesel fuel since January 2025.

Irfan explained that this strategic step is part of PIS’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support the national energy transition. B40 is a hybrid fuel made from plant-based biodiesel. Since its introduction, B40 has proven to be more efficient in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, offering a more environmentally friendly solution for the transportation sector, including the shipping industry.

The adoption of B40 aligns with PIS’s long-term green vision to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. PIS continues to integrate sustainability principles into every operational aspect, focusing on energy efficiency, the use of eco-friendly technologies, and the development of green energy-supporting infrastructure.

PIS has also implemented various green technology innovations to support this vision. One significant initiative is the use of energy-saving devices (ESD) on several PIS vessels. Since its first implementation in 2022, ships equipped with this technology have shown a significant improvement in fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, PIS has adopted dual-fuel technology, which allows the use of both alternative and fossil fuels either alternately or simultaneously. This dual-fuel technology has been proven to save up to 30% of total vessel fuel consumption.
